Commitment is the culture - how to keep showing up

Today marks my 800-day anniversary of walking 5,000 steps before breakfast. For somebody who never exercised in their life, this is a huge milestone.

In March 2024, I embarked on a program to reclaim my health with an amazing health coach. Part of that program was walking 5,000 steps before breakfast. As someone who had done many stops and starts around exercise and tried every program imaginable around weight loss, this one finally stuck.

It's easy to start. It's easy to do day one. The real work is getting up the next day, and the day after that, regardless of the conditions - rain, snow, travel, significant life events I have had to face this year. It is about showing up, day after day after day.

So, what is it that keeps us going? What keeps us committed?

It starts with making the commitment in the first place.

This year I have had the great joy of being involved with three incredible training rollouts, each one a testament to what happens when an organisation truly commits to building a world-class service culture.

The first an amazing client in local government, at the very start of their journey. Passionate, committed, and CEO-led, we began by training the Executive Leadership Team and all leaders at their leadership forum before rolling out to the frontline and internal teams. They are at the beginning, but the commitment has been made and that changes everything.

The second is an exceptional client now in their second year of embedding a service culture. It is one thing to make the commitment, train everyone, and have the focus and energy of that first year. But the second year? That is where it gets special. The commitment to not let it be a one-off event, the depth of appreciation from the team for the training they receive, the level of engagement, and being able to see the wins and witness how far they have come was something truly special.

The third involves a dear long-term client I have had the privilege of working with for ten years. Ten years!  As the customer service training program has evolved the content, the delivery and the approach, one thing has remained constant - their commitment to world-class service and their drive to keep taking it to the next level. Their focus on people and customer experience is nothing short of inspirational.

As I reached day 800 on my walk, I found myself reflecting on the correlation between those daily steps and what I witness with my clients. This is the difference between a sustainable service culture and training that becomes a one-off event. When organisations engage their entire people in the customer journey, bringing teams together, investing in mindset, skills, with leadership driving the service culture to create an organisation-wide commitment, the results speak for themselves. It pays dividends. Every single time.

And so, on day 800, I walk with immense gratitude for the clients I get to walk beside. Clients I dearly love working with, who have made such a difference to my world, and who are exceptional in how they continue to invest in their people.

On that note, I am so thrilled to announce the fourth year of You're Being Served - Giving Back to the People Who Give.

This year's theme:

How To Sustain a Service Culture

This day was created as an opportunity for leaders to bring their people together, to celebrate, honour and recognise them, while also enjoying a full day of professional development and curated experiences.

This year we are heading to none other than the MCG, an iconic venue that itself delivers world-class customer experiences every single day.

On the day we'll be diving into everything it takes to sustain a service culture, from both an organisational and personal standpoint and how we continue to show up in service of others, every day, as leaders and as team members committed to delivering world-class service.

Tickets are selling fast and numbers are strictly limited.

Leaders, bring your teams, invest in your people and let's make this the most memorable day of their year. I cannot wait to share this day with you!
